Despite hating his time as a Marine, Matt sure has pride in his accomplishment. And he always complains about how he doesn't get Veterans Day off; I agree, I think he should get it off. But he doesn't. I tried to convince him to take a vacation day, but no.
Matt also claims he doesn't like surprises or a big deal made of his birthday. So this year I decided to surprise him by making a big deal of Vers Day, especially because he had his name engraved in a veterans wall for vets from Central Oregon that was dedicated this Vets Day.
So I made an awesome sign (the kind I'd have held when he came home from a tour in Japan... had we known each other and had I not been 16 at the time ;). I decorated the downstairs with red and blue streamers and gold balloons. I found a cute pic of his Marines days and framed it. I rewrote a memo he once wrote himself while feeling a lack of recognition. And I made him a breakfast of baked brown sugar bacon, eggs and cinnamon rolls. Carsen and I also gave him sweet cards.
In the afternoon, we went to the wall dedication.
The only beef was it was very, very chilly. C didn't even flinch though when they did a gun salute.
In the evening, I made pork chops and we ate cake. My sweet (ex)Marine felt spoiled, as he should!
